InstallFest

A prototype of an article to which to direct people wondering just what the 'installfest' is, that we do at the very least at Penguicon. None of this is official, or even necessarily accurate. I just wanted to get something in here for now.

Nanotech -- Coming Soon to a Store Near You

By Frank Dolinar

By now (April 2005) everyone knows the term 'nanotechnology'. But when I first started talking about it in the late 1980s, most people -- including my friends -- looked at me like I had just arrived from Mars. I've been watching this emerging discipline for about 18 years and think I know enough about it to discuss it with some clarity -- and to recognize that there are still people who don't get it, don't get it right, or let some preconceived notion get in the way.

Desktop Linux Overview

(delete this line)

By Caleb Cushing

Linux (pronounced lih-nucks) is an open source, free operating system that is used to run a variety of applications on a variety of hardware. 'Open source' means that if you want, you can view the source code of an application, which would also allow you to modify the application. Technically it is GNU/Linux (pronounced guh-nuu) Because for the most part, GNU is the tools and Linux is the Kernel. Linux is a multitasking, multi-user, operating system. This means that it has the capability of managing thousands of tasks, including allowing multiple users to access the system simultaneously, at the same time.

A Day in the Sun

By Frank Dolinar

Years ago, I saw a political cartoon with a disconcerting message. In each of the four frames, there was a cigar smoking, industry fatcat responding to an unseen person who had apparently just made a request for electrical power. It went like this:

“You want coal-fired electrical plants? No problem. We own the coal mines.”
“You want hydro-electric power? No problem. We own the dams.”
“You want nuclear power plants? No problem. We own the uranium mines.”
“You want solar power? No prob…” Pause “Solar power isn’t feasible.”

The cartoon didn’t mention oil, but it could have and it would not have changed its very clear message.

From Sputnik to SpaceShipOne (Notes from 2004)

by Frank Dolinar

"These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise..."

Humanity's quest for the stars probably began when hominids first looked up at the moon with curiosity. My fascination with space had its beginnings on October 4, 1957, and the launch of Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite. It's a date that I celebrate each year as an important event in Earth's history.
