One of the best bargains in technology today is the wifi router. From the factory, these units are usually configured to perform only a few basic functions, even though they are capable of much more. Many of these routers run Linux-based firmware or can have Linux installed on them. Though the hardware resources are limited by today's standards, you can often install third-party firmware that gives you virtually unlimited control of the device and access to a variety of open source applications. At this week's GLLUG meeting, Charles will demonstrate how to install third-party firmware on the Linksys WRT54GL and La Fonera wifi routers.
