Penguicon 6.0 Computer Room - Maple A

This is the layout and notes for the computer room for 2008 at Penguicon. It is a work in progress and intended to be a group-maintained effort. :) (in other words, don't be afraid to change, edit, add, correct, or answer a question if possible).

My original concept diagram is Penguicon 6.0 Computer Lounge.PNG. This was created after finding out the room dimensions and layout. Red is hopefully where the hotel will lay down power and protection...we can piggyback data to that (quit shuddering!) and then the blue lines are our own connections.

The current/final room layouts for the area we're in is in Penguicon 6.0 Room Layout (Maple,Birch,Promenade,Lobby).PNG. I didn't want to try and hack out just our room (Maple A). When we finally get set up, Registration is going to store their servers behind our desk, and run cable to them. Apparently power is in 60 amp increments, so we're gonna get one big 60A breakout box, and then use wall plugs; two separate 20A circuits in there. I'll try to get things sorted out on Thursday.

We are scheduled to be able to start setup at 1:30 pm Friday. At this time, all the tables and chairs will be set up, and we'll just hafta start tossing in computer equipment.

Major Equipment planned:

  • - 24 Terminals (computer, monitor, power and connection cables)
  • - 2 Gaming Stations - Rick
  • - 12 BYOC stations
  • - 72 Port HP ProCurve Switch for Terminals
  • - Secondary switch for Burnboxes // Backup switch for Terminals
  • - Terminal Server (wi-fi connect for BYOC)

Support Equipment needed:

  • - 30x Keyboards
  • - 30x Mice
  • - 36x Power Strips
  • - Patch Cables (10x50', 15x25', 15x15')
  • - Hall-type carpeting to cover up the cables if the hotel doesn't. Or the bodies. Whatever. :)

Requirements/Requests:

  • - 100A Service
  • - Securing (blocking?) of back door to Maple B
  • - Caching Web Proxy
  • - Recent copy of Package Repository from MSU

Our network access
From Nick Adams @ MPCon

I set up your network, you'll be on your own VLAN. I will set up 2 ports
for you on my switch, if you need more ports for your stuff, let me know.

You're set up with 10.10.10.0/23 (510 addresses) with the first 49 reserved
for static addresses. Rest are DHCP. If you need a larger subnet, let me
know. :)

Network: 10.10.10.0
Netmask: 255.255.254.0
Broadcast: 10.10.11.255
Gateway: 10.10.10.1
DNS: 10.10.10.1
NTP: 10.10.10.1
DHCP Start: 10.10.10.50
DHCP End: 10.10.11.254

I block P2P (at layer 7,) MS-SQL, 8080, and SMB traffic at the internet,
both ways. The router machine also has a transparent caching proxy running
to help keep things under control. I also run the snort IDS.

I don't know if you plan to further NAT behind this or run connected
directly to it, either way, you should have what you need.

If you have any questions, let me know. ;)

Regards,
-Nick Adams

Events in the Computer Lounge:

  • - Keysigning Party - Saturday, 11-1 (prereq for the PJ if you need a GPG key -- all need government photoID x2)
  • - Package Jam - Saturday, 3-5. The local Wiki for coordination will be at 10.10.10.10 on your webdial....

Most everything else will be in Maple B that's got to do with computers

Outstanding questions/comments:

  • - Any hardwired connections for the BYOC area (perhaps to facilitate the package jam) or is it just going to all be wireless connections?
  • This shouldn't be a problem, I'm told; hardware availability is the key.

  • - Volunteers? Do we have anything to organize them? No requests have been made to the con at large yet, as our own house isn't in order
  • Charles says Chick usually takes care of it. Chick has said a few times he's doing so. I just wondered if there was actually something non-arcane that was used as a tool to keep track. I should have known better; making volunteering work is definitely an art, not a science...especially when code is NOT involved!

  • - The Package Jammers mention: The big trick is that people (especially so close to the hardy release) will have Feisty, Gutsy, and Hardy machines that might show up. So if it's possible to grab the different versions for that machine it would rock.would appreciate it. I don't know if this is possible, but I note it here. Another comment: Ideally I will be able to setup a wiki on my laptop and have the users on the lab machines be able to connect to it. A number of lab machines would be helpful. I've been thinking of trying to bring a bunch of ubuntu live cds to have people boot to so that it's easy to get everyone on the same page, but that would then require everyone to download some packages which might be a potential bandwidth issue.
  • - Classrooms: Nothing scheduled for our room.
  • - Pygame: Nothing scheduled for our room
  • - Installfest - Scheduled for Friday night, 8 to 11 (or whenever). Volunteer call has gone out.
  • - CRT Monitors: We have the mound of CRT monitors from Lady Sarah. Some may not have power cords, and full count with info is coming soon. Question is, um, is there anywhere to store stuff for a year (between cons)? Right now, if we end up with a full 30 donated from this source, I'm thinking a pallet and a roll of wrap, but that might only hold 27....

-- I could store a few CRTs in my basement. -- Rick

    Anyone else? :)

  • There's always more to add. Mostly, we need to make edits to keep track of who will bring what, and we're doing that, so I'm happy. :)

    -- Peter Smith

  • - Who's bringing what? Make notes here, leave me a message if you can't make notes with names and details. Yeah, I'm HORRID with names.
